Royal Doulton must surely be one of the most well known and well loved potteries in England.
Going back to 1815, John Doulton became involved in a little pottery in Lambeth, on the banks of the river Thames.
They began trading in inkwells, ginger beer bottles etc. When John’s son Henry joined the firm in 1835, the business expanded rapidly. Successful in sanitary wares, he was then able to pursue more artistic interests.
In 1867, George Tinworth was employed to establish an art pottery studio, and so began the wonderful world of Royal Doulton character jugs, figurines, animals etc.
